Rosedene Nurseries at the Hemlington Initiative Centre prepared children for the excitement of bonfire night last Friday. The children had a wonderful day doing lots of activities relating to bonfire night, they've made sparklers, a bonfire picture and also a firework picture. They talked about the 'hot' fire and how to keep safe, then the noises fireworks make and what colours they may see in the sky.
Not only are the activities highly topical but they also link to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. Some of the activities linked by getting children to understand the importance of washing their hands before touching food, using the pincer grip to make things and understanding the world and a discussion on how to stay safe.
These activities were followed up this morning during circle time when staff talked with the children about family time at the weekend and what they saw during the firework displays. This produced some excellent communication from the children who showed confidence to talk about the fireworks and bonfires they had seen.
